rebuilding 289
hey everyone i havea 289 in my 66 mustang right now with a c4 tranny. I have hooker long tube headers, a mild cam,a B&M blower that pushes about 10 psi, 327 gears, it was an old 6 cyl car so i replaced the front spindals with 5 lug off of a 68 mustang. and i replaced the rear end with a 8.8 out of a 91 gt. i cut and welded the brackets myself. anywaysi need to rebuild the 289, im not great with internals but here is what i want.
i want to be able to push 12 psiwith out worryin aboutblowin it up.
what i have,
289 block that i am going to get bored to a 302.
i have a forged crank, with forged rods and pistons,
im buying a set of afr 185 heads,
with 1.7 roller rockers with a custom ground cam.
WHAT I NEED: i need a list of parts that i need to put this all togeather, such asallthebearings i need, i just want someone to list everything i need so i can price all the parts.
would be appeciated ;]
thanks

welcome to the forums!
you cant bore a 289 to a 302. you can put a 302 crank and rods into the 289 block and make a 302, but you cannot just "bore" it out to a 302 (and i am of the strong opinion that a 289 is a superior motor anyways)
that being said, it sounds like you already have most of what you need. just add rings, bearings, gasket set, oil pump, timing chain, and pushrods and you should be good to go.
btw, if your getting a custom ground cam you sh ouldnt need 1.7 rockers, those are for people trying to get more lift out of their current cam..... and you'll need a pushrod length checker to determine which pushrods you need with your new heads and the custom cam.
Good Luck!

I know very little about engines internal, but I was wondering what you thought of the Hooker Long tube headers you have on your car..I have a 66 also...did they fit with no problems?
Exactly what pair did you install, and where did you buy them?
I have heard of so many problems with headers not fitting,so I thought I would ask someone with a 66..by the way mine is a automatic..is yours?
Thanks scott

i also have hooker super competition ceramic coated headers...full length....i had no fitment issues what so ever....i have a 4 speed toploader so i would think it would be easier of an install on an automatic trans
I have read here and other places that a stock 289 block is only truly dependable up to about 450 HP.... I think ablock girdle will bring this up 50 HP or so, but you might want to check this out before you dump a lot of $ into the engine.
I would not mention it except that it looks like you will be making quite a bit more power than this, and you will certainly have the potential to do so with your combination.
You might consider starting your list of parts with an aftermarket block!!

i really like the old blocks. i have quite a few friends that have built up the 289 blocks and cleared 425hp with them. so im not too worried about the block. if it goes it goes you know lol i thought about also getting a newer block from a 94-95 mustang ... but i dont know just kinda throwing up some good ideas. by the waywhat are some mufflers you all like? and dont say flowmaster because its the worst exhaust ive ever heard. if you want to sound like every other car out there put a nice flowmaster on your car or truck ;] haha..
