Default 429 SCJ

What years did they make this engine? I am looking at a 71 fastback that was made into a mach 1 clone and the guy says it has a 429 SCJ engine and I don't know much about this engine. Thanks for all your info on this engine.

The 429 SCJ is a very desirable engine. The SCJ boasts a better block and heads than the CJ or base 429 which were considered excellent.

450 factory foot pounds of torque...

Easy to stroke to 460, and no one has to even know...

Quite a few 385 series speed parts are available, and when hot rodded these engines are beastly. 600 HP on pump gas? You betcha!

These engines are rare to say the least. Only 1,250 CJ/SCJ Mustangs were built for the 71 Model year (the only year) out of 36,499 units. They are as rare as a Shelby. Some were C codes (non Ram Air)and the other with the Ram Air option, had the J code.Today, theirare only about 400 of these CJ/SCJ Mustangs accountedfor. These engines are strong enough as they sit. They can easily be modified to gain even more HP. They come in as a heavy weight though. Here is a site that will give you all the info you need.

The CJ and SCJ have a 4 bolt main block, forged pistons, large port and large valve heads. The SCJ used a mechanical (solid) lifter cam with adjustable rocker arms. They do NOT share the block with a 429 Thunderjet (average 429). They put this engine in other cars such as Torino's so the Mach 1 clone could have a 429 SCJ or CJ from another car. As with the Boss 302 and 4V Cleveland, the ports and valve sizes can be too big for your average street engine since they were designed to flow a lot of air at high RPM's. Still I'd jump on it if it is a CJ or SCJ engine even if it's not a true 429 Mustang (clone).
I can tell you they are heavy but they produce a lot of torque!

As far as I know they only put the 429 motor in mustangs for 69 and 70, in the boss 429. The SCJ is the 4 bolt block, the CJ is not 4 bolt. Other than the block itself the CJ and SCJ are pretty much identical.

And as far as I know the 429 was never used in a Mach type car. It was the FE blocks in the mach (390,427,428).

ANd the ones in the Torino/montego were just "regular" 429's or the PI (police interceptor).

Not trying to get in a pissing match but the SCJ and CJ were both 4 bolt main block with the exception of some early 70 blocks andFord did put the CJ and SCJ in the 70 and 71 Torino and Cyclones. The 429 SCJ Mustang could be had in a Mach 1 also. Just check the link from evil on the 429 Mustang and Cougars. Here is a link to Ford engine specs. You'll notice the CJ and SCJ both had 4 bolt main blocks.

and here is a link to a numbers matching 70 Torino 429 SCJ
