Default Engine Block Blue Color???

I am about to paint my new block and am having a hard time figuring out what Dupli-Color Blue to use. I have order 1601 Ford Blue, 1606 Dark Ford Blue, and 1621 Old Ford Blue, but I am not sure which is the appropriate blue for a 69 315 engine. Can anyone help? I know the 1606 Dark Blue is much darker than my current engine color, but I have no faith that the PO used the right color either. 1601 is Called Ford Blue and looks a little lighter. 1621 is called Old Ford Blue and I am not sure what color it is yet. Can someone who has done some research help here?

I read an article in Mustang Monthly about engine color and they recommended 1606, but dang that is dark. Most all the pictures of engines in the magazines are not that dark, so I am not sure that 1606 is right.

Any paint experts out there?

I believe we used 1601, but am not positive. Old Ford Blue goes back to the 50's IIRC, so I'm sure that's not it, either.

I'm pretty sure when i had my 78 F100 its engine was dark blue. I painted an engine with 1601 and it was lighter than the truck's color.

I recently used a rattle can labled "old ford blue" ona new waterpump for my 69 302. It does look ashade darker than my valve covers and engine block. But that paint is also over 14 yrs old. Unless u'r concurs showing, if you do it all the same it'll look good either way.

This is not going to be a concourse car. I would say a slight restomod with classic intent. The block is a Dart 351, so it is not even an orginal style block, but I wanted it to be the right color.

The dark blue is almost a navy color. Very dark. The Ford Blue and old Ford Blue have not come in yet, so I am not sure how they compare.

Here is an article discussing engine color. The problem is the blue they show is lighter than the paint they suggest.
http://www.mustangmonthly.com/howto/...nes/index.html

They call this Corporate Blue. It is close to the Dark Blue Color.

This is close to the color of my existing engine. I can only guess that Regular Ford Blue 1601 or old Ford Blue would be close to this.

The article says the Corporate Blue is the correct color for all engines after 1965 and before they started Ford Gray. The problem is most every picture they show and most every picture I have seen in magazines, the color is more like the bottom picture which is much lighter than Dark Ford Blue (Corporate Blue).

Ford corporate blue ... as well they mention:
We've learned through observation andconversation with restorers that Duplicolor's Dark Ford Blue (1606) isan accepted color for '66 and later Ford engine restorations.

not sure, but that's what a bit of googling and mustangmonthly tell me ...

NPD also lists a Plasti-cote 224 as an "alternative to the corporate dark blue in 67-69" pg 238. Krylon 1923 is whatI bought for my 66 289 from Classic Mustang. Hope this helps.

I will do a test spray of Regular Ford Blue and see what it looks like when it arrives later this week. I just never see engines painted that dark blue.
