Default 65 AT Transmission Shifter Problem

Hello everyone. I am hoping to get a little advice for fixin my shifter. The problem is that is doesn't lock into gear. The car runs fine and everything but the shifter just slides up and down through the gears instead of locking into each one. Is there a way that I can fix this? Do I need to purchase a whole new shifter? Hopefully it is a simple problem that can easily be fixed. Thanks for any help.

Yea, it just moves freely. The transmission shifts into gear, but the shifter doesn't lock. So I always have to look and make sure that the little marker on the shifter is lined up with whatever gear I want. It can easlily be slid out of gear while driving and that would not be good. So I need to find out how to fix it to lock back into the gears.

take off the 4 screws on your shifter bezel, underneath you should be able to see how the shifter works, and there is a rectangular piece of metal that will slide against a metal piece that has a pattern that will cause it to "lock". that may be missing or worn down.

It could be the shifter bushings.Does the shifter handle move side to side??? also It could be a broken shifter handle. They have a spring inside that controls the detent tab under the bezel.both problems are easly fixed or replaced.Check Bigdmustangs.com

true, try moving the shifter all the way to the right and see if it "locks" then
