1965 Mustang Radio Patch Panel = A Real Pain!!
#11
Wow.. that looks clean. I like it.
So how far out from the main radio hole did you go with the patch? I hope I worded this question correctly.. Basically, how big was the patch? I am picturing that you cut the patch down to a smaller square to only cover up what was needed?
Man, great job, cause I cannot tell where the patch is.
Here is what I am going to be dealing with...
And the new patch...

Well, essentially what I did is trim the patch down to just big enough (left to right) to cover the holes that were cut and drilled into the panel. I cut it just above the little bend above the radio area so I would have a flat area to weld to and trimmed it to a nice flat below the radio. In other words...trim yours kinda the size of the "dirty area" where the last plate was and go a bit higher that the bend above the hole. I used a MIG welder and did the spot weld method all the way around to prevent warpage.

finally got around to it
So I am finding that restoring a mustang is not an overnight chore... Loving every moment, but this goes to show how my mind gets way ahead of the actual work.
Took your advice and just chopped out what I needed to.. My welding has "improved" to the point that I felt comfortable enough to do an area that was not to be covered with carpet.
Turned out pretty good; however, the indention area on the patch is not as wide as the original. Not sure if there are other brand repops out there. It is nothing that I cannot make look good after some filler primer and paint.
Thanks again for your info!

I wish my dash hadn't been hacked too for a POS Craig tape deck. I just cut it to fit a single DIN CD player. At some point I would like to patch it and get one of those retro type stereos.
I was planning on using JB Weld when I do this. It looks like that will work. Do you have any pictures of yours gothand?
