Default wtf engine rebuild help..

alright so the 289 is well - going back together..i have everything back together except the heads aren't on and i have some questions

i have

Comp Cams 1431-16 roller tip rockers
Comp Cams 4504-16 5/16 to 3/8 studs
Comp Cams 942-16 Springs
Comp Cams 768-16 Retainers

and my cam is the

Comp Cams FS XE268H-10

(these are on a gt40p head)

for good measure i bought the Comp Cams 4816-8 Guide Plates

looking over again to the studs i have, it says they are not designed for guide plates yet people told me to get them - so can i use them or are they not recommended?

also whats the procedure for tightening these down to check the pushrod length correctly using the adjustable pushrod as with how do i tighten them down correctly for normal operation. (yes i am getting hardened pushrods)

Here is what one person says about a similar combo.....

I am still looking for other opinions....

Rocker studs & guideplates:

For aftermarket heads with stud mount rockers the lower thread diameter on all rocker studs is 7/16". The upper diameter will depend on your rocker choice. This will be 3/8" or 7/16". For higher rpm use or increased spring pressures the 7/16" is going to be the better choice.

The lower thread diameter on a pedestal mount head is 5/16". Comp Cams sells a conversion stud w/ a 3/8" upper thread and the proper 5/16" lower thread. These allow the use of adjustable rockers but will require a rail-type rocker for alignment since a guideplate can't be used.

if your studs have a hax base on the bottom like these, you can use them with guideplates just fine.

Ok, here is what I think...

Your setup will work without guideplates if the GT-40 heads have small holes where the pushrods pass through the head.... The guideplates you have now will not work and should not be used.

If the head is "open" where the pushrods come through, then your setup will not work as purchased, either with or without the guideplates you have right now.

Scroll down to the bottom where it says "Ford" and all will be made clear!
