With a stroker, you go get more torque, but remember that the more you stroke, the lower you make your redline due to piston speed. Iam going the 383 route to get just a little stroke, but still have some room for high rpms. I like it because you get a little more than a 351, but nothing crazy and you can still spin upper 6000s. The 393 is also a nice choice, but the 400s makes me nervous in a stock block. I ended up getting a Dart Sportsman for strength and because I am an over the top kinda guy. With those, you can also go with some serious bore and still have a small block!

I have a 408 Stroker in my 70. Making about 500 Hp. I would not go over 408 as the motor is really stressed above that. And frankly, you don't need more than 500 Hp on the street. My car is a bit scary.

You should consider subframe connectors, and BIG front brakes. A 9" is nice to have and go with 31 spline axles (torque, you know). New shox and a monte carlo bar and one piece export brace will help. What trans will you run? A bigger radiator is also a good thing-aluminum is best.

I have no cooling or any other issues with my car. But, I replaced EVERTHING under the car.
It should run in the 11's and it corners like a slot car.

Let me know if I can help>

I have a 71 Mustang coupe with a 408 Cleveland stroker thats laying down over 650 hp to the rear wheels. I didnt have to do any real frame reinforcements but then again my Frame rails are MASSIVE by mustang standards and on a 68 id probably add subframe conectors and reinforce the torque boxes. Id also recomend going with Better shocks, Driveshaft, a trans that will handle the abuse (i only say that because ive distroyed 3 so far and 2 torque converters) and as for the 9in that should handle just about anything you can throw at it but i would change the ring and pinion gears for sure maybe the axle shafts too as an added bonus but ive seen them handle some pretty serious abuse. As for the brakes UPGRADE THEM! your going to need the extra stopping power too slow down the car. Also be careful about cam choices on that stroker otherwise you wont have to much engine vacum to run accessories like power brakes and the like. You can fix that however by adding a Remote vacum canister.

Just remember though like political power Horsepower corrupts absolutely.

Would definitely upgrade brakes to disc, at least the front, and if you have stock suspension I would upgrade that. 8 Inch rears are fine, I have 400 horse to mine with slicks and have never had any problems, just make sure before you put slicks on it that you get hardened axles as those will go first. There are many mustang sites that sell parts, do some searching find the best price on the part you want!
