Default Rear end dimensions

OK I was reading that the 67-70 Mustang rear end was 59.25 inches. Also stated "These measurements are from flange to flange. Subtract 5" for bare housing length.".
Is this from center to center of the spring purches or the overall lenght of the rearend?

Thanks

Without the axles in it,the housingneeds to be 54.25 inches total length (flange to flange/end to end).
