Should I modify my 66 engine.
Do you think I would be OK with the stock heads? Does it make any difference that they are smog heads? I had thought if I put different heads on that I would save the old heads but maybe that sounds dumb. I'm not sure, thats why I'm here bugging all you guys. Thanks.
Unless its a "K" code or "vert" go ahead and modify it, Do a compression test first to see if the engine is healthy enough to take any kind of build up. Just cause it's got 60K on it don't mean it's "ready to rock". From there, if good, it's a matter of how much money you have and want to spend. Lots of good suggestions here on the forum.
Whatever I decide to do, I have will look at the entire engine before I do anything. I have contemplated a complete rebuild so there are no worries. This is a great site!
Kind of a power package deal for me as i did the heads cam carb and intake all @ the same time.
That motor is going in my wifes 65 fast back after a lil clean up.
It was a fun street mild engine that made for some reason a abnormal amount of torque for what it is.
Amazing dif over the stock 289 heads and autolite it had on a cast intake.
Best way to sum it up was ran as strong as a 5.0 but revs quicker and makes more torque.
Unless the had nos or s/c i was just as fast or faster than my friends 5.0's
Cant remember the cam specs. OH YEAH almost for got cobra 1.7 roller rockers and the big fat manley pushrods.
I had the 4 speed also.

well if i do get em' they'd be goin on a 351 with a vic jr (most likely), a farily large carb ( 625-650), and a fairly large cam. it will eventually be a 408 stroker too. but with the stock rotating assy. i was thinking with that setup maybe 330hp to the crank? or am i way off?
if your going that rout save your cash fro some afr 165-185's more room to grow from the gt 40s are limited then once you start porting them youll have the cash about where you could have gotten good alu heads anyway. just imho.
just do what you want to the car and dont worry about keeping value. Unless it is an extremely rare car, that just takes all the fun out of it. Save all the stock parts in case the next owner wants to switch back, but other then that, I would say: Its your car, do what you want.

Thanks, thats kind of what I was thinking. I like it original too, thats why I have an old car, but at the same time I would like a little more performance while staying close to original.
Thanks
