Default Help, ticking sound

Whenever I hit 2000 rpm in my car I start to hear a ticking sound coming from the motor. Once I accelerate past 2k I don't hear it again until around 3000 rpm. It seems to be coming from the left side of the engine and I can still hear it slightly at idle. What do you guys think it is? Thanks in advance.

Yikes. That sounds like more than a tick. It sounds too high pitched to be in the bearings, so I'm thinking valvetrain. Pull the covers and check the lash on every single valve. Also check to see if your rockers are hitting the valve covers anywhere. and keep in mind that listening to sound clips over the net is totally different than irl, so what we hear may be different than the actual sound.

You're a little too brief in your description. Can you duplicate the noise without driving? Rev the engine while standing next to it. Use a long screwdriver as a stethescope to isolate to a particular spot, if its under a valve cover, its usually a lifter sticking. try some marvel mystey oil or a pintof ATF in your oil to free it up. If it won't stop ticking, its time for some engine work.

Typically ticking noises are lifter related or due to low oil pressure.

Yeah I can duplicate it. If I rev it up to 2000 rpm it will do the same noise. I'll go get some Valve Medic to see if I can get some them to stop. I'll also check all the things that you said to do 67mustang302. Thanks guys!

My car makes the same type of noise, what causes the low oil pressure and how is this fixed?

Might be a collapsed lifter or one that isnt getting any oil. Low oil pressure can be caused by a pump that is worn out and has too much internal clearance or worn out bearings with-in the engine. Oil pressure is a product of restrictions inside the engine (i.e. the small clearancebetween the rod bearings and the crankshaft). An oil pump is jsut that....a pump...all it does is push oil through the engine. The restrictions within the engine is what creates the pressure. The proceeding message was brought to you by Master Gunnery Sargent Marshall Law from my time spent at Aviation Mahinest Mate "A" school circa 1968.

Good job Mustang Dad, pretty good answer! Probably not a collapsed lifter thoug, cause that's not a temporary condition. Some times, years of neglect will cause oil passages to clog and limit the volume of fluid (oil). Thus,no oil, no lifter filling. and other times the liffter clearances catch up and the lifter bleeds down causing excessive valve lash (and noise).

Exhaust leaks can also causeticking noise. especially bad if you have headers.

thighten up your exhaust and see if that has any effect.

If your 302 isn't too new, the valve lash should be adjustable I think. I think you should pull the valve covers and check the lash.

Sounds like a lifter. Or two or three. How tired is the motor? As stated, try adjusting the lash. And FYI you can run that way for a long time if money is tight.
