Default Odd use for gasket material?

OK, I've got the front rails and bumper mounts for the 65 all cleaned up and painted. Where the mount attached to the rail both the rail and mount were rusted and pitted. Same for where the second mount attaches on top of the first mount. I did get them down to metal and primed them with Rustolum gray primerand painted with Satin Black. However, the pitted areas are still pitted...the metal is not flat. This area obviously held water before, causing the rust in the first place. I figure it will do so again, probably worse since the metal is no longer flush due to the pitting, and my prime and paint is probably not as strong as the original. I was thinking of cutting some thin neoprene gasket material to put between the metal pieces to seal it up when it is bolted down. I don't don't think the added thickness will move the mounts enough to be a problem mounting the bumper. What do you think...should I try it? I marked the area in the photo.

Haha

I read it as Odd use for gasket material...Your nuts!

you should use 3m autobody compound. It binds well to primed surfaces and stays slightly flexable...can be compressed very thin and is water proof...actually used for sealing up seams
