Default cylinderhead bolts (torque)

how can i see if i have " bolts with integrated washer " or bolts without integrated washer " as my cylinderhead bolts.

the engine is a 1966 289 v8.

in the manual the torque specs for cylinderhead bolts are ( in 3 steps) 50 , 60 and 65-70 ft lbs butttttttttttttttt in the fel pro paper that came with the gasket kit says:

for bolts with integrated washer 25-35 ,45-55ft lbs and finally tighten bolts 1/4 turn
for bolts without integrated washer : long bolts 80 ft lbs and short bolts 70 ft lbs

the fel pro paper claims to overrule the ford manual on these specs since they have done extensive testing and research

thanks

You are going to need to use one procedure or the other! I have never personally used the "torque to 50 then a 1/4 turn" method, but I think it is based on sound tech. If I had the intergrated washers I would probably give it a try....

do the bolts have have a flange? i use the torque the long bolts to 50-60-82 ft/lb and the short ones to 50-60-72 ft/lb. the long bolts are torqued higher because the intake wedges into the heads and causes them to lift. if the head bolts are original or similar then use this method. but i dont know about this intigrated washer bussiness???

if the washers are loose then they are not integrated, if they are part of the head of the bolt then they are integrated.

Looking at my Haynes book right now and it has the cylinder head bolts for a 289 at 65-70. Not sure of the extra 10lbs on those long bolts will help or hurt you.
