Default ignition on 1968 coupe

alrighty i got a 68 coupe and it was stolen then recovered. the ******* that stole it ripped the ignition out of it, so i got all new stuff, well i got it hooked up and everything but the problem is that the car will not crank unless you put a "jumper" wire from the hot side of the solenoid to the hot side of the coil. so that tells me its not getting 12 volts to the coil from the harness. I have a haynes, Chiltons, and a Ford shop manual but there is two small wires on the pigtail for the switch that the book does not list. One of them is coloredsolid purple, and the other is red with white stripe, Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can make it very hard forsome one to steel it!!! they can try to hot wire the ignition but it will not start! they can try to hot wire it by bypassing the solenoid by going from the battery to the coil but it still will not start! Just remove the roter from the distributor they can try and try but inless they have a roterthere not going to drive it off.....it works!! lol

what do you mean with crank exactly, because there is a lot of confusion about this ....
do you mean turn over or actually run ????
I would say the latter as jump wire to coil has nothing to do with starter.

if you have this cable in place (hot side starter relais to coil+), can you start and run the car normally?
that means you start the car with your key and it keeps running

If this is the case, then the purple coloured wire you are talking about could be the pink wire in the wiring diagrams
the pink wire is the resistor that goes from ignition switch to coil
in this diagram:
http://www.hammar.dyndns.org/~djhamm...ng/1968/E5.jpg
cable 16A (pink)
from ignition switch termincal "C" to resistor to 16B to 16 going to coil+

not sure if it's that one, but purple could be mistaken for pink ?!

nah i got it, it was a purple wire, i had the pink one hooked up already. The purple wire went to the idiot light for the brake light switch which was also spliced through the 12 volt wire for the coil, yeah thats what happens when too many people work on one car.... But thanx guys i got it runnin
