Default Installing aftermarket front sway bar in my 68 coupe...

I am planning on replacing my stock front sway bar with a new aftermarket one. I have been reading here in threads to avoid the polyurethane bushings... I have also read that you can use some sort of anti-squeak grease or something... anyone know about this?

I am planning on just going to 1"... Would 1 1/8" be overkill? I do not have immediate plans to add a rear sway bar but could be persuaded to go that route and/or traction bars. If you have experience with this stuff and would like to share, I would love to hear about it.

Really though, my big question concerns the difficulty of the job... I have not been able to find detailed instructions online explaining the process. I am wondering if the car needs to be on jack stands or if a ramp is adequate? Is it a very simple job? Will I need an extra set of hands or can I wing this one alone? I would love to try to do it this weekend, probably with no help. I am hoping to pick one up at Mustangs Plus out in Stockton CA tomorrow morning... Cant wait to browse their aisles!!! Better bring an extra Visa...

Thanks for your help all.
Cheers!

I replaced mine years ago with the 1 1/8 and 3/4 rear sway bar. It's hard to say how much they helped because I did all new spring and front disc brakes at the same time. All together made the car handle really well. Before I did all that it was almost imposible to drive an emergeny stop would make it do a 360. as for putting a new swaybar on the front its a pretty easy job half an hour if you take your time I would use the ramps because if memory serves me you need the weight of the car on the wheels.

super easy job, less than an hour. as for the bushings, the stories are true, poly will squeek but i coud not find any anti squeek so went with the Midolyne bushings, supose to last longer than rubber and no squeek.
you might save some money oy ordering thrugh cj ponyparts, mustangs unlimited, NPDor laurelmountainmustang. that grab-a-trac mustang plus pushes is realy over priced.

good luck

I like the 1 1/8" bars. Easy to install and will make a BIG change. The rear, a 3/4 is fine, I'm not sure I would add it untill you drive some with the new front bar. You may very well decide that you don't need it.

If you do the rear swaybar make sure you reinforce the area around the ubolts they are known to pull tru the frame rails.

As for the anti-squeak, I have heard that wrapping the sway bar in white teflon tape provides enough lubrication to prevent the squeaking. I have hear about it, but not actually tried it myself. So take that for what it's worth.

Thanks for the great info, fellas.
Really do appreciate it. I wont rush the grab a track without scouring the other catalogs first. Thanks for the tip, mortman.
BTW, mustanglover66, I am also going to be adding a front disc brake conversion soon... got an 08GT kit coming from mustang steve soon...
I dont have plans yet to put a sway bar in back...

Evil, thanks for recommending the 1 1/8"... I think I will go that route. I can't wait to see the improvement firsthand.

Thanks, all!

I bought the grab a trak, and for awhile, I didnt notice any squeaking. Now, she is pretty loud, especially over speed bumps[:@] Also, the rear sway bar came with my kit, but I have not installed it. Dont really need it for my purposes, YET

Hey bluovalguy, which kit did you buy from Mustangs Plus? I am considering one and not sure which leafs and springs to buy (4 leaf, 4 1/2 leaf, 5 leaf, mid-eye, reverse eye, stock coils, 620s, etc...). Also, what tire/rim size do you have? I am trying to get the right stance for my 66 convertible and I like your stance.
