how is it gonna cost 3800 to fix if you dnt even know whats wrong? it could be a head gasket. or a warped head, or a cracked head.. those are the ony things i can think of right now. but even if it is the whole motor, it wont (shouldnt)cost 3800 to swap out. if i am missing something please tell me, but im confused @ why they might claim it totaled...

the insurance company doesnt have a "fair market value" for that car and they think its a peice of **** i guess, but i know otherwise, the car has a 6000 engine in it. The reason it would be 3800 to fix it (worst case scenario) is if the block is cracked, id need new short block plus labor (even though im doing it myself), plus parts, plus gaskets, plus oil change, plus magnaflux block, plus radiator flush and fill, etc etc etc. we ran the number up a little high for two reasons. 1 the insurance company is going to try and jew me down anyway and 2 the worst case scenario needs to be quoted so that i wont have to go back to the insurance and make yet another claim. i think i got it all but if not please let me know lol

I would say the chances of the block being cracked at better than 20 to 1.

I say that water in the oil could be a result of

1. Blown head gasket

2. Cracked head (one or both)

3. Faulty intake gasket

4. Blown head gasket and a cracked head

5. Cracked timing cover

6. Cracked intake manifold

7. Cracked block and cracked head

8. Cracked Block

Provided I have not forgotten something, I consider these items to be listed in the order of likely cause.

Well I'm assuming he didn't abuse it the person or persons that stole it did. You have no idea what they did or how they drove it. I have heard of a radiator pressure test to see if there is a leaking gasket or crack in the system.

the insurance company is going to try and jew me down anyway
I cant help in your situation but I have to say something...
I am not Jewish, but its not cool to use the word "Jew" like that. I would not be surprised if some of the guys on this forum are Jewish and I know they wouldn't appreciate it, regardless if you think its harmless or not.

Good luck getting the situation resolved with as little pain as possible.
