+1 on a roller cam, especially with the modern oils, it saves possible headaches.

As far as the actual phosphate levels, go to the manufacturers site and look at the product info for the oils, find something in the right viscosity that has a high Zn/P content, like 0.12%

If someone can tell me with some degree of certainty that a particular oil has all the right additives, I'd go buy a case of it tonight. This stuff is confusing and worrysome for someone with a new flat-tappet engine on a stand waiting to be put in.

Isn't there a site like bob the oil guy? Someone please post a link.

Maybe this has been said already, but How much ZDDP (in ppm)is right for a flat tappet engine? I don't think the EPA is completely remozing it but are reducing it to 800ppm. Mobile one has a 15-W50 that has 1200 ppm designed for hi-performace and race flat tappet engines.

Does any one know if this is enough and if it will work in a small black ford?

Also Mobile1 high miliage 10-30 has 1000 ppm ZDDP and and SL rating. accordiong to comp cams website this is enough.

Can anyone verify if 1000ppm is enough for our cars?

That's all fine and good, but all I've heard since they came out was that synthetics are to be used only after the engine is broken in.

It's hard to find a synthetic with 1,000ppm or greater fo Zn/P in it. Redline has them, some of the Mobil 1 and some of the Valvoline Racing synthetics, as well as Amsoil and a few others. I bought a case of non synthetic Valvoline VR1 SAE30 yesterday. 1,300ppm Zinc and 1,200ppm Phosphorus. So .13%/.12% respectively. It was about $52 for a case of 12qts.

Dunno. I know that I feel more comfortable with .12% or higher. Most of the oils you see advertised as "Includes ZDDP additive" seem to all be .12% or higher.

So Valvoline VR1 non-synthetic it is. Any hints on where you can get it? I know my local AutoZone doesn't carry it.

Napa can get it, but I know my store here doesn't stock it. If it's not a stock item, you'll have to buy a case.
