Default another rear end ?

Hi all,

I'm planning to pull the rear end out on mine to clear off clean up the bottom area and replace the brake line coming from the front to the rear. I was planning to also clean off the housing and repaint/cover in some por15 like product. I notice the area where the 3rd member(?) bolts into the housing looks a little damp; does that indicate I need to replace the gasket there? Also, since the rear end is out, would it be cheaper now to have new gears and maybe a TrueTrac thrown in? I think I have 3.00 gears in there now; what would you guys recommend if I want a little more low end pull put want to keep (what little) mpg decent (I have a C4)?

Thanks!

With a C4, you'd be pushing the RPM's up with anything lower. If you were to go lower, I wouldn't go much more than 3.25. There are rpm calculators all over the net if you search. Replacing with new gears and a true-trac will cost you if you don't do it yourself. You might be better off buying a preassembled 3rd member that you can install yourself. You can replace the gasket, but if it's not leaking then why bother. Power wash it good and keep an eye on it. I wouldn't use POR15 on it. I would use a good quality paint with a good primer base. Something that cures hard to resist chipping.
