Default autolite 4100.. and what secondaries?

so im thinking id like to get myself an autolite 4100 for my four barrel upgrade. heard only good things about em.only question is are they one size only? (CFM that is) i have a stock 302, but plan to have some heads (GT40) on there aswell as some headers in near future.

nother question. what are some pros and cons of vaccuum secondaries vs machanical? I like the idea of mechanical better, but just looking for opinions

the venturi size decides on cfm on those.
1.08 venturi (stamped on the side) = 480cfm
1.12 venturi is 600cfm

A mechanical secondary is opening depending on what you do with the pedal.
A vacuum advance is only opening when needed by engine (pulling). It is some kind of overcarbing protection.
The vacuums are much better for gas mileage and smoother to drive.

The mechanical secondary will be more performant than a vacuum one (I believe). And I heard people saying that the problem with the gas/mileage on the mechanical ones is just the fact that they're more fun to play with ;-)

vacuum. i never had one, but according to the ford shop manual once you have vacuum building up in the primary booster this will open the secondaries.

There is lots of information on Autolite carbs on this website...

Of course they want to be the one to sell you this carb, but there is all kinds of info on these carbs spread out on this site.

http://www.ponycarburetors.com/

And it is just happenstance that I live in the same town as their shop...

Ponycarbs claim the autolite 4100 is the best thing since sliced pan, which according to their words holley has yet to produce. I once heard the autolite4100 was based on a holley. no idea if true or not. but in any case they are fantastic carbs.
I have the 2100 (same thing, just 2 barrell) and it indeed is a fantastic and easy to tune device. I'm convinced if I had any other carb I would have gone 4barrell 2 years ago. I will eventually but I'll definetly survive for another half year without it ;-)
So from that there might be somethign to their greatness ...
