A 351W would make for a cheaper/easier build, depending on how much performance you're looking for. As far as the difference, the cam will prolly be different, which won't really matter since you'll replace that in a performance build anyway. And the carb/intake setup may be different as well, which again, you'll prolly want to replace in a performance build. All you're really looking for is the block and crank, and maybe the rods, and in a Cleveland, the heads. So, make sure the heads aren't bad, or that there are signs they may be bad, otherwise you're justing wasting time getting a Cleveland without heads.
the 351 in the truck is probably a 351m and there isnt much there that would help you out in mustang performance....parts will interchange but nothing performance wise.
in the early 70's ford designated the truck engine a 351c but it got too confusing so they changed the tall deck 351" engine a 351m(midland, modified, measley or whatever the m's for)

the M stood for Mexico. The 351M and many of the other Ms were made in Mexico and its similar but not the same as a 351C although both are considered mid to big blocks. Go figure.
Sorry. I always heard the engine was built in Mexico. Must of been hearing things. Here isthe correct answer.
