Another Smell Question
Ok... I know I asked the last smelling question. I have another one. Is this normal. The car has sat in the garage for about 2 weeks straight. I went into the engine compartment and I smelled alot of gas and oil smell on the outside of the engine. Normal? If it is, I will not worry about it.
Thanks!
Thanks!
If it's strong enough to knock you on your butt when you open the hood - not normal. If you are sticking your nose down on the block and sniffing - probably normal (although you may not be). If it is somewhere in between those two extremes it sounds like you may have some gas leaking somewhere. Anything on the floor? Next time you park it for a while put some newspapers under it. If it drips gas it will leave the newspapers stained and wrinkled even if the gas evaporates.
+1 on the possibility of agas leak. Sometimes a leak will be so small it evaporates as it seeps out and you might not find it. These old carbureted cars do smell like gas though. If you can't see a leak anywhere, no spots on the ground under it or wetness around the fuel line or fittings I wouldn't worry about it.
i had a leaking carburator after i drove mine around for a few months after getting it. was leaking at the gasket for teh accelerator pump and the pump itself. look for "moisture" around the carb body
i had a metal rube fuel filter going to the carb. (screwed into front of carb).
the tube and screw are soldered together and that broke at some stage with engine rattle or I don't know what. So there was gas dripping out every now and again. very little. when the pressure is released (after a few minutes standing) it would stop. but I found a tiny pool of petrol which I fiurst mistook with water on the engine. car shouldn't smell of petrol unless as mentioned above you have your nose stuck inside the carb
