What type of carb do you have? Check to see that when you are first starting it up cold, your choke plate (butterfly) is almost closed.. When she warms up your choke should pull the plate open.. Different carbs are adjusted differently..

I've been cleaning up my engine, trying to get 15 years of dirt and oil off, and now when I start the car it starts up right away, but then stalls if I lift my foot off the gas. As long as I keep pressure on the throttle the engine runs fine, but as soon as I let it idle the engine just stalls. All I've done to the engine is clean everything up as well as hook up the vacuum advance/retard which had previously been disconnected. Do I just need to adjust the Curb Idle or could this be a timing issue? Ideas?
Basically, you need to start at what you touched last. Disconnect the vac hose and see if that corrects the issue. If it does, why? is there vacum there? there shouldn't be at idle! or does the car die if you plug that hose, but not to the dist. That indicates you're running too rich or too slow. Check that your choke plate sets full closed when the engine is cold. (step on the throttle all the way to the floor to set the choke-mandatory for all carburated cars) Check that the fast idle sets the engine speed to about 12-1500 RPM (rule of thumb). Check that the choke pull off diaphram opens the choke plate about 1/4 " or so when the engine starts, check the general conditionof the ignition system and timing. This should get you started.
