Default 66 I6 Distributor Rotor

I bought a rotor from CJ's and it had a lot of play (side to side) when installed. I figured it was the wrong one and got one from the auto parts store. Same thing happened, when installed it will move about 10 degree's in each direction.

Is this normal?

Car runs fine and I was able to set the timing. It just makes no sense to me to be that loose.

Been awhile since I've worked on an I6 but as I remember there is a clip that slides onto the distributor shaft before the rotor goes on. Yours may be missing or it may be on the old rotor. Check and see.

I don't know if Ford still makes it, but the Ford part number is OBA-12213.

Some 6-cylinder distributors used them, some did not, but if your distributor uses one, the rotor will be loose as hell without that clip.

I looked for that clip for you but could only find an entire distributor for $80.

Thanks for the help.

I called my local Ford Dealership (Bob Bell Ford) hoping maybe this samepart was used into the 90's and might be in stock. The first guy just laughed and said he would get an "old guy" to help me. Rico "the old guy" took the time to find the new Ford part number and found the partin stock 90 miles from my house.

I called that dealership and ordered 5 clips.

Funny thing is I have running the car for two years without this clip. It will be intersting to see how she runs with the clip installed.

I'll bet she runs a damn sight better. You gotta love those old Ford guys. The good ones can do wonders. Why can't the young guys so that? BTW how much were the clips?

I was so impressed with this guy I called back and spoke to his boss. His boss said the same thing, "I wish I could get these young guys to act like him". It took this guy about 10 minutes to find the numbers for me. He took the time knowing he didn't have the parts himself, then took the time to find them at another dealer and get me thier phone number.

The clips were $2.00 each and they said about $5.00 for shipping.

I was afraid I was going to have to pick them up at the dealership. 180 miles round trip with DD @ 20mpg, I'll gladly pay the $5.00.

I love stories like that! One of the first cars I restored was 68 GT/CS for my Dad. It was about 1979. The car had been hit on the drivers quarter and needed a side scoop and the California Special script emblems. The scoop was not problem but the emblems were a pain in the butt. Needless to say there was no such thing as reproductions in those days. The old guys at the local Ford dealer, Phil Long, worked and worked to find them. It took him 2 weeks but he finally found them in Kansas. I was thinking we would have to do the car and leave the emblems off. In a way it was more fun in those days. You had to go out and find everything you needed, get out and talk to people. Met some real cool mustang people that way. Now all it takes is a credit card and a computer.

The saga continues. My guy called to say he searched the warehouse and could not find the clips. You got to love a Ford guy, he foundtwo other dealers and phone numbers who listed the part.

The 2nd guy had them and confirmed they were in his hand. He said they would be in the mail today.
