Default running nitrous

I asked the nitrous section if it is safe to run nitrous on a rebuilt 351 engine, stock crank, hyper kb pistons, and edelbrock top end kit with a 100 shot. THey said it will be fine. This would be my next project if the engine could handle it. THe nitrous would be used seldomly. Some people said don't do it, and some say it will be fine, so I am tryng to get all the opinionsI can get.

If you mess up that nitrous tune even one time, it'll destroy those pistons. Set it up on the rich side to be safe.

Ditto about those pistons. Hypereutectics aren't nearly as tolerant of abuse as forged pistons.

+3 on the pistons. You really need forged pistons to play with nitrous. Hyper pistons are not tolerant of heat so running a little lean with destroy them. Make SURE you are running on the fat side if you do it.

The problem with hypereutectic pistons is that they're very brittle. With cast pistons you'll either melt them or burn holes in them eventually with detonation, but hypers will shatter with one good pre-ignition boom. They're great for NA street engines (I have them in my 331) because they're very light and are stronger than cast, but I wouldn't ever use nitrous with them. That's what forged pistons are for.

+1 on what Starfury said. Even minor detonation will shatter hypers. They can be used with f/i or juice, but you have to tune rich to keep heat down to prevent detonation, even the minor detonation you can't hear or feel can be enough to break them. But doing so costs you power, which again, is what forged is for. They are great for n/a street stuff, and even some race. The LS7 in the Z06 Vettes run hypers iirc.

With forged pistons on a 302, depending on the rods it has, 50-75 is a joke. If I sprayed my 302 I'd start at like 125-150, but the pistons and rods are forged. The weak link would be the rods, if they're stock, but with good rod bolts then they'll take more, aftermarket rods even more.

i have stock rods with arp bolts and forged pistons and "better than stock" rings.

but my 66 will be my DD when its up and running again so would 100 shot be good?
