Default Looking for correct accelerator return spring setup.

We are to the part of putting the carb back on and hooking up all of the linkage/return springs and so forth on my '65 289. I was wondering if anyone knew where to find a schematic on how the accelerator return springs are installed? I have found a couple pictures but they have a longer skinny spring. My car had a longer skinny and a shorter fat spring. I wasn't there when it was unhooked and the guy that did it somewhat flew by the seat of his pants and doesn't remember how it went on. I found a schematic in the NPD catalog on pg 120 but it only includes one spring, which is the skinny of the two. Do you guys have any pics of your setups or know what is correct?

-By the way, you guys have been *very* helpfull in this process... I just want to say thanks to everyone that has replied to my posts. -EJ

See if these pics help the spring attaches to the bottom of the carb butterfly below the accelerator linkage and to a bracket bolted to the manifold. Sorry the pic are a little blurry. The spring on mine is the double spring but a single spring is the same.

That's the same setup I have, but it's not factory correct. The correct way is for a spring to run from a bracket on the intake to the small bend in the middle of the accelerator rod.

you should only need one return spring as far as I know. I have an autolite 2100 and the original spring was connected to a bracket at the end of the intake manifold to the accellerator linkage.

the most important thing here is testing the setup. you should be able to press full throttle without the spring bending or interfering in any way. stretch only.
when you let go quick and when you let go very slow the throttle should be closed fully (as much as the curb idle screw allows).
if the spring is not pulling hard enough or the setup is wrong then you might end up with something that your car will idle at 800 and next traffic light at 1000 next traffic light at 600. this will wreck any fun in driving and can be quite dangerous.

My spring wouldn't do the job correctly so I mounted it to the front where the spring sits in a better angle pulling harder.
