Default Engine code

This may sound like a stupid question but...Where is the engine code on the block? I found one, but I'm not sure if it's the one I'm looking for. Thanks in advance.

here's where I found the code

Looks like a date code.
If its a 65 block you should find casting e.g. C5AE and a date code behind the starter (you will need to drop the starter to see it)

If that's a date code I believe that means DEC 16 1969.

Where is the "M" and are you sure its not a "W" if t is a W it may be the foundry mark. I am remembering this from an old casting Number bok. but I think a W is windsor foundry and a Cl is Cleavland. ignore the fact that its a windsor engine, both foundries made both widsor and clavland engines. for example I have a 64 289 Wndsor from the cleavland foundry. This cold all be wrong its from memory. Hope it helps.

m= december. here's the list:
A = Jan
B = Feb
C = Mar
D = April
E = May
F = June
G = July
H = Aug
J = Sept
K = Oct
L = Nov
M = Dec
(there's no I)

for the engine code itself you'll have to pull the starter
more info in the FAQ

Second Digit
Month

A
January

B
February

C
March

D
April

E
May

F
June

G
July

H
August

I
Not Used

J
September

K
October

L
November

M
December

9M16

= 16 Dec

but the 9 could be 69, 79, 89?

the casting number behind the starter will look something like C('60s) or D ('70s) then a digit for the year within that decade (5, 6, 7 or whatever) then AE which means A - Ford, E - engine.

if it has something other than A, it can be for a specific line. B - Bronco, Z - Mustang (examples - and there are lots)

try this...it takes a while to get your head around

Default RE: Engine code

Thanks so much guys. One more questions. Where's the code on the block that will tell me what engine it is (i.e. A-code, K-code, C-code, etc...)? BTW, it's not the factory engine.
