HELP! New distributor wont fit correctly
Try some vasoline on the o-ring at the base. Ideally, it should be a snug fit but you should still be able to push it down. Bumping the engine over with the starter may help, just depends on how far off you are from lining up with the oil pump shaft.
It's frustrating, but you'll get it.

Thanks for all the tips. I did the vaseline thing, and had my mom bump the engine while i pushed and it still didnt work, so i got kinda frustrated and started hitting it (softly though) with a rubber mallet and it went in!

i blew my motor many years ago, because i "thought" i had my distributor back on correctly................
the rod that connects on the bottom of it, goes on your oil pump. if it isnt on there right, you wont be pumping oil,.........so it's important to be 1000% sure that it's on there, and seated correctly. i learned the hard way.........
you'll know when it seats down...........sounds like you got it.

the lead to the coil and crank the starter ( don't want engine to start if there is no oil pressure ), that should cause enough
pressure to be noticed on the oil guage as a small movement. Alternatively pull the oil senderpipe if its a mechanical sender and you
should see oil spew out. Don't forget to put it back though........
When I put my dizzy back last time, it was a bitch to get it to fit onto the oil pump shaft. But it did eventually go in there.
