Default Electronic Ignition VS Original

So will an electronic ignition actually make starting a cold-natured 6 cylinder any quicker?

Likely, yes, especally if your points are worn/misadjusted. Electronic ignitions make for much more reliable starts.

Probably. Points suck, they have to be adjusted regularly, they can wear out and they're not always consistant(as they start to wear).

Does an electronic ignition pull more or less from the battery?

The ignition system has a very low draw on the charging system. What pull there is comes from current flowing through the coil as it's charging, which doesn't really change when you swap. Why do you ask?

An electronic ignition is ALWAYS better than a points system. It doesn't depend on the alignment of moving parts so it is not subject to wear, environment, or depend on multiple actions occuring in the right sequence. Are you going to see a "noticeable" performance difference if you change over? Maybe...maybe not...that kinda depends on what you've got in terms of engine set-up, how many miles are on your set-up, and how you drive it. It will be better for your engine in the long run, and reduce your maintenance requiremants. It will also make the most of any mods you have done or will do to the engine.

It's kinda like a guy who quits smoking. Is he going to feel so good in the first two weeks after quitting that he can run a marathon? Probably not, but it cetainly puts a running marathon within his reach if he behaves right and trains a little.

As for battery/charging system draw...the electronic ignition is, if anything, a little more efficient in terms of amperage. So that's one more little gain.

If you can afford it there is almost no down side to changing it over.

I believe the Pertronix ( sp? ) II unit has a feature to improve starting.
I have the Pertronix I unit and it works great. But if I were to do it again
I would go with the newer improved unit or something similar.

The Ignitor II has variable dwell and an automatic ignition cutoff to keep from frying the coil if you leave the key on with the engine off.

Bear in mind that if you think you might upgrade to CDI box then the variable dwell is of no value.
So you need to plan ahead a little to save money.

A better coil won't hurt either.
