Default engine rotation

ok maybe a dumb question

i am putting my dizzy back in,

i know i have to get the #1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke.

i also know that the TDC mark on the harmonic balancer will cross the pointer twice, once for compression once for exhaust.

i tried the rag in the hole trick to find the compression stroke but it never popped out when i would turn the crank with a breaker bar

am i turning it the right way?

do i turn the crank clockwise or counter clock wise when standing in front of it.

the electrical is still out of it so i cant bump the starter yet.

You can pull the valve cover for # 1 cylinder and watch the rocker arms. When TDC is near both rockers will be down indicating the valves are both closed.

Easiest way to to take cap off dizzy, turn motor clockwise until dizzy rotor is pointing at #1 plug pin and balancer is at or close to initial timing mark 6-8*. You then just take old dizzy out and put new dizzy in with the rotor pointing in the correct direction.

If you already took the old dizzy out, you need to get a friend to put their finger in the plug hole. You then turn the motor clockwise until they feel air push out. That is the compression stroke. You then turn the motor just a little more until the timing pointer is pointing to 0* on the balancer.

Make sense?

For me the the easiest way is to pull the spark plug and stick a screwdriver in the hole.
It will be completly obvious when the piston is at TDC.

Also, if your looking at the front of the engine, it is clockwise. At least thats what I was doing this week. I hear air when I am turning mine, normal?

If you turn the engine counter clockwise "left" when looking at the front, you will loosen the balancer. That is not good to do if you don't intend to. It should be torqued to about 100-110ft-lbs.

my manual says 70-90
its torqued to 80ft/lbs and considering i had to use an impact wrench to get it off i think i am ok
