1966 Upper & Lower Custom Console Pics
Per Soaring's request - here are a couple pics of my consoles...
I had planned all along to mount my CD player in the floor console. But when it came time, I found that due to its angle, the A/C registers didn't leave enough room. It does have an arm rest, storage compartment, and cup-holders though. (Those round things you see in the front of the floor console are the A/C registers: 1965 Ford.) So I needed to come up with another idea for the CD deck.
I've never cared to reach all the way over to the glovebox to adjust the stereo volume, so that location was out for me. And I've always admired the 67/68 overhead consoles - so one idea lead to another... I built the frame from plywood and pine 1x1s; and added strips of aluminum to help it keep the proper bow along its top side. It's mounted at the rear view mirror points and the rear window trim area. Tension keeps the middle secured against the roof. I then covered it in cotton batting and white vinyl. The woodgrain is real wood vaneer that's been stained and varnished.

Great job Dan. Just curious....Why did you use white vinyl and not the tan to match the seat inserts?

As for the color - my interior is white/aqua deluxe (although it would look nice, there's not an actual tan and aqua). And as most of us have come to know, Ford's idea of "white" left something to be desired! Plus, mine has darkened a bit over the years. When I bought the vinyl, they had snow-white and off-white, so I chose the off-white. It wasn't until I installed the finished consoles in the car did I see it wasn't as off as my upholstery! Plus the camara flash made it appear even whiter than it truly is. It matches pretty well in person. I may eventually spray it with a can of the white interior dye and see if it comes any closer.
While we are sharing pics, here is my center console that I put in recently. I got it off Ebay but it was blue. So, I got some vinyl dye and repainted it. It had a few cracks in it, so I used fiberglas to patch those. It turned out good, but the old pot metal still has the bubbles in it. Oh well, that just gives it character.
