what do i keep doing wrong
this is how i installed my dizzy
rag in plug hole 1
bumped starter
rag popped out
tdc was about 1/2 inch past timing pointer (bumping starter isnt exact i guess)
so i backed the engine up with the harmonic balancer and a breaker bar
so that the pointer is perfect on the line
i drop the dizzy in with the rotor at #1
it goes in smoothly for a change
however to crank and idle smoothly the canister nipple is all the way to the left.
the vacuum line is off and plugged

You're a tooth off (maybe as much as two, but probably just one). Static timing is actually ~ 10* BTDC, and at that point the leading edge of the rotor will just be inline with the leading edge of the distributor cap contact. Points will be just at the open point (electronic ignition will be lined up).
With the distributor cap off, carefully lift out the distributor, reset the oil pump drive and distributor shaft to advance one tooth (anti-clockwise), and you shouldbe good to go. If you still have torotate the distributor housing too far clockwise to get the engine running right, just repeat the above steps to gain another tooth.
It isn't right, until you've fought, cussed, sweated and bled enough to either have the cops, an ambulance, or both at your door step.
