oil leak
I have a 66 mustang with a 289 in it. I had an oil leak so i got a new one piece oil pan gasket and installed in it however i still have a leak towards the rear of the pan.I am almost 100% sure that the rear seal is where it needs to be.I used gasket adhesive to ensure that is. The oil pan is stock. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
pull your tranny dust cover and see if you have oil inside on the bell housingand flex plate. If its the seal, it's easy to replace, if it's an after market seal. the original rope seal may have a barbholding it in, which might make it a pain to get out. Little secret, once you have the pan off and rear main cap off, and the seal out. . .use a feeler gauge to help slide the new seal in so it doesn't catch or cut on theblock. Bend the feeler gauge in a V shape and place it between the seal and the V groove in the block.
Every oil leak on a SBF appears to be the rear main. No matter where it's leaking from, it shows up first on the front of the block plate. Look at places like the oil pressure sender, front cover, and valve covers.
NAPA (and others) sell a nifty leak detector kit. Some dye for the oil pan, and a black light. Works pretty well.
Most shops have a smoke machine. It injects a petroleum based smoke into the crank case. Where the smoke leaks out, is where the oil leaks out.
