302 buildup questions
so i have a few questions concerning my 68 mustang 302. first, i was looking at the edelbrock top-end kits, my firstquestion is:what do you all think of them? assuming i have everything built up and strong enough to handle theextra power (tranny, rearend, etc.), my plan goes as this: edelbrock top-end kit, demon carb, headers, exhaust, and maybe some other small things. so my second question is: how does that plan sound to you guys? anything to add? anything to change? i was working the figures and i think i could do all that for around $3000.

The top end kits are decent, but if you spend a bit more you can get better heads and a roller cam and make more power more reliably. As far as doing it all for $3,000, prolly not. Invariably you run into snags that cost a bit here and a bit there. The h/c/i you could do for 3 grand, but adding in the carb, headers, exhaust, ignition etc you're looking realistically at more like 4k.
I have the Performer rpm kit, heads, cam, etc.for the money I like my setup. The heads are ported and mine have the 2.02 intake valve. I am not sure about all the stuff you want to do for 3000 but the heads and cam you will like.

It depends on how concerned you are about power and cost. AFR's heads are good, reasonably affordable, especially for the power they make. Canfield makes better heads but they're also more expensive. Trick Flow's heads are capable of making good power as well. The Edelbrock heads are still good, but AFR heads generaly make better power, Canfield heads use extremely high quality parts. Dart makes decent heads as well. Regardless, a good roller cam is really necessary these days, it's getting harder and harder to find engine oils that work properly with flat tappet cams. Roller cams may cost more to run, but last longer, have better reliability and make more power.
What you need to do is sit down and figure out what the goals are for this car, what you want it to do. Then you can go from there in figuring out what you need to meet that goal.
Kit's like Edelbrock's top end are really hard to beat, they make good power for low cost.
