Progress towards paint
Made good use of my vacation so far. The car was original paint so I only need to prime where I do repairs or where the paint was worn through. It will be a repaint of the original Honey Gold, which looks more green than gold to me.
The valance and upper and lower stone guards were taken down to bare metal and primed. The stone guards were also painted with spray touch up and will be sanded after reinstalling. The car will be painted with the guards and valances and fender extensions on so I wanted to paint anything which might not get reached with the paint gun. The extensions also have been taken to metal and primed and painted on the inside. Headlight bowls were pretty nasty with rust but cleaned up just fine and were painted with satin black. All of the bumper mounts also have been taken off, stripped to metal and primed and painted with satin black. Cleaned up the front rails the same way before I put the bumper mounts back on.
It's gettin' there!
After paint, it's off to the shop for transmission seals and leaf springs. The transmission did not start leaking until after I had it far enough apart it was no longer road worthy, otherwise I would have done that first. The seals are probably just dried out from almost no use in 20 years.

lucky. you dont have to strip the paint all the way... someone did a crummy job on my car and all the bondo and paint were cracked so the metal is rusted all over the whole car.
anyone ever seen this before? im guessing its from improper metal treatment before priming...?

That's strange. The last picture it actually looks like some kind of fungus gowing. Is that rust? Interesting how some of it looks like it's from paint checking and other places actually have swirls in them.Does it leave a stain when yousand it down?

Yeah, original paint makes it a lot easier. If it's been on there since 1965 then it's probably stuck pretty good. Any sharp edges, like the top edge of the front fenders, were worn all the way to steel. Toughest part are the rockers. No rust at all but thousands of chips, so its going all the way to the metal.

true66, yeah someone did a crummy job on there. Looks like they didn't prep it right (grease contamination) or they either went to heavy in between the coats of paint. Good luck, I think that it will be better when you take all of the paint off, knowing that the only paint is going to be whatever color you decide on going with. Won't have layers and layers of paint... like mine.
yeah it is rust. and actually its smoothed down flush with the metal. its not rough. and it wont just come off with the DA. ive tried 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 sand paper. do i need to worry about it much? im thinking i should just soak it with some rust killer and then wipe it off, then bondo whatever needs it, and prime it and paint it. im hoping it wont crack through my new paint like it did the old stuff...idk what to do about it.
If you can't sand it off itmay bea stain in the metal. I don't know if a stained area will cause paint problems like rust would. I would tend to think not...but I am not an expert here. I have painted or filled small stained areas without problems. If it were a small area I would not worry about it but considering the coverage it might be a problem. Have you tried metal brightening products...Barkeeper's Friend comes to mind. Works wonders on tarnish and stain.
I was hoping for next week, but the work unconvered a few spontaneous vent openings (sounds better than rust holes) which I have to fix. Shooting for the end of the month.
