Is it a good idea to coat the inside of the oil and tranny pan gaskets with oil or tranny fluid?

Also, the neutral safety switch - I understand the car should start in park or neutral, but mine only starts in park. Is that a big problem? Could that affect the way the engine runs? Why would you want to start the car in neutral?

 

I would not coat the gaskets with anything but silicone sealer.
Keep the surfaces spotless before applying sealer.

The car should start in neutral. Ever had a motor stall and need to restart while rolling? I have.
You would have to pull over and come to a complete stop to jam it in park.
It won't have any effect on the way the engine runs.

 

True. Good point. I just figured since I always coated the oil filter with oil the same would be true for the gaskets. Silicone sealer on the valve cover gasket too? Silicone on all gaskets? Is that the same silicone sealer they use to seal windshields?

 

The reason you put a small amount of oil on your oil filter gasket is so the gasket doesn't get stuck to the block when you go to put a new filter on. Hey unit91 or anyone, do you by chance have a picture of where your neutral saftey switch connects in the engine bay? I just removed the hacked together shifter that was in my car and replaced it with a stock one and I can't figure out how to get my switch wired up. There wasn't one on there before so I don't know where the wires plug in.
