On an old engine, the lifters may be slightly mushroomed at the bottom, making removal a little more complicated. I ran into this a couple years ago when the shop I worked for was rebuilding a 200.

another trick is to leave em in till last and spin the block over and use a hammer and punch (im not sure about the 6 but i know you can on the 8) but be careful of scratching or dinging the lifter bores.

Thanks. Got them out. Kinda hooked by the top with a bent awl, then worked them out with a pair of needle nose pliers. Came this far ...may as well replace them all.

Stupid question: are they supposed to compress? One come apart and I noticed a spring inside. Tried to compress another and it didn't budge. Just curious how they worked.

Thanks again,
E
