what shocks for a 65
alright, i have a 65 conv. with a 289. I am in need of some new suspension and was wondering what you guys suggest. im only looking to replace the shocks right now.
i looked into bilstein but they only go back to '79?
someone suggested monroe loadleveler's for the rear if i want it to sit slightly higher then it does now.
the current shocks are shot, probably at least 20 yrs old if not original.
heres a link to how it sits right now: https://mustangforums.com/m_5016678/tm.htm
it rides like a boat though haha.
im looking for it to sit about the same height it is now (i know new shocks may make it sit slightly higher) but i want it to have a moderately stiff ride. not rock solid to where it rattles apart but i definately do not want to feel like im driving the boat down the river becuase of it floating haha.
soooooooooo whats some good set ups?
edelbrock performers?
koni
monroe

you could just go with factory replacements if you want a decent ride and since the rest of the suspension is stock. new shocks even if there factory replacements make a world of difference compared to old worn out ones. nice car by the way! just my 2 cents.
they say firm ride but they work just fine for a DD.
you also might want to consider some new coil springs. grab-a-trak GT coil springs would be a good choice also. heres the kit for $90

i have the gas-a-just shocks on the front of my 71, i had them on the rear but they were wayyy too stiff, i kept them on the front because of the iron head cleveland which is no lightweight. i personally feel they will be too stiff for his stock ride.
Shocks do not affect ride height, they're there to absorb suspension movement. If your car sits low, you need to replace the springs.
Air shocks should NOT be used on Mustangs. The upper shock mountsare not designed to take anywhere near the load that air shocks place on them. Using air shocks with a higher pressure is likely to punch them straight through the upper mounts.
If you have the money, Edelbrock IAS shocks are amazing. I just upgraded to a set and I love them. The ride is smooth, and they handle great. If you can't afford them, I'd probably recommend a set of KYB GR-2's. They're not as stiff as the Gas-A-Justs so you'll get a smoother ride out of them.

what edelbrock IAS shocks do you have? ive seen 2 different versions of them, classic & performers i think?
i dont mind a stiff ride. thats what i dislike about my monte, i grew up learning how to drive in a '98 camaro (dads) that handled pretty good and road a little stiff.
i just dont want them so stiff they rattle the car apart when i go over bumps haha

As far as I know, there's only one version available for our cars.
I swapped from KYB Gas-A-Justs all the way around, which were particularly stiff. They handled great and I liked them (I have a high tolerance for crappy ride quality), but the Edelbrocks are much smoother, and they still handle better.
Having driven multiple late-model F-bodies *shudder*, my car rode considerably rougher than any F-body I've ever driven. It's still not exactly the smoothest thing in the world, but the Edelbrocks make it pretty tame driving around the crappy roads here. Don't expect your car to ever handle like a 98 Camaro, but with a decent set of springs and shocks, it should handle ok for a 40yr old car.
