Default Engine Codes and Where To Find Them?

Ok I have what i think is a 1964 1/2 Mustang. And i was reciently under the hood just starting to do the restoration on the motor and i noticed that it had a 4 barrel carb. Where can i find the engine codes to tell if it is really a 1964 1/2 or a 65. It has a generator so i always thought it was. It has a 289 and i asked my shop teacher and he saidd he didnt know what the codes ment but he thought since it had a 4 barrel it was a HiPo. Any help here?

theres 3 codes on the inner finder. two underneath the fender. one you can see when you open the hood.

mine says 6R07Axxxxx

6 mean 1966. R means built in San Jose. 07 means coupe. and A means GT (4bbl) then the rest are paint and trim codes or whatever.

the codes dont mean that much after all these years though. Mine is an A code with a 2bbl carb. Just depends what the PO's did to it before you.

so you gotta do some research then.

i had a hole in my radiator support for the foglights. i have the extra support in my rear subframe. i have the hangers for the dual exhaust. etc etc. i KNOW mine is an A code even though i never had paperwork or a door tag.

was there a reinforcement underneath the back seat? and did u stick you finger up behind the rear leaf spring into the subframe? there should be a reinforcement tab in there. if you have those then its a GT. dual exhaust and a 2bbl carb are easy to install[&:]

what kind of reinforcement are you talking about under the seat and in the frame rail. I just looked at my frame and there are two tubular braces going across the frame for a bolt to go through. At least I think it was for a bolt. I dont remember removing any from there.

heres the hole in the rear subframe. stick you fingure in the hole and feel towards the back of the car. you can see the original hangers for my dual exhaust.

and heres the hanger under the rear seat for the exhaust. one on each side. theres a little plate on the inside of the car under the seat that reinforces the two bolts for the rubber hangers.

All GTs had dual exhaust but not all dual exhaust cars were GTs.

k well then if you have an original radiator support then look for the foglight holes.

also look for the emblem holes in the fender and quarter panel. i found my original GT emblem holes cause someone had taken off the GT and put a normal mustang emblem on [&:]. why? i have no clue. i also DONT have holes for the chrome trim on the quarter panel swoop right behind the door.
