Default RE: Engine Codes and Where To Find Them?

just another point of clarity...an A code engine is not a GT identifier either.

A GT had to be either an A code(225hp, 4bbl) or a K code (271hp, 4bbl). It could not be a C code (200hp, 2bbl) or a 6cyl. However you could have any of thoseengine options on a non-GT car.

I agree with Tony. What the car once was and what it is now may be unrelated. Having said that there was a 4bbl 289 64.5 option. It was called a D code engine. IIRC there was also a K-code option. One way to tell is to look at the bell housing. All the 64.5 v8s were 5 bolt. This changed to 6 bolt for 65 on.

have a look athttp://www.mustangmonthly.com/thehis...964/index.html
note it doesnt mention the k-code.

1. check on what you SHOULD have
if the engine code in VIN is
K - 4barrell 289 HIPO
D - 4barrell 289
F - 260 (V8)
V - 170 (straight 6)
T - 200 (straight 6)

if you have a V8 and you should have a straight 6, then someone did a conversion.
if someone did check if only the engine was converted or the whole car. for example check if your car has 4lug wheels or 5lug wheels

Then what was said earlier: 2894barrell doesn't mean Hipo. It's just over 200HP stock, where the Hipo has 271HP stock

2. If the engine seems correct, you can check for the engine code, which is under the starter. You'll have to pull trhe starter to see it. So before doing that I would check on the date code of the engine. It's easy to find.
It's on the very front of the engine, just before the driver side head meets the block on a little flange.
it's something like 6M11. The first number tells you the year. so if it's a 66 engine, then it can't be the original .

Lucky you! Please do yourself a big favor and clean that door tag up and make a pencil rubbing or copy all of the numbers. It tells you everthing you want to know about that car (if it's the original door tag) Put his info into one of the online decoders and you will have a complete record of build date, engine, trans, axle, color ,interior, special DSO, and the VIN.

The only way to know if it is a numbers matching "orginal" car is to check the engine and tranny numbers to see if they match your VIN. Other wise, you have a 64.5 Mustang with period correct engine and tranny, but NOT original.
