Default Help with a Centerforce clutch

I have a 70 Fastback with a 302 engine & a top loader for a tranny. I have just bought a Centerforce Dual friction clutch along with a new Fordracing flywheel from Summit. I'm in the process of installing them, but have come to a hurdel. The Haynes manual says that I should apply 12 to 20ft lbs of torque. I have applied a hell of a lotmore torquethan that just to sit the clutch assembly to the flywheel, is this normal? Also, the clutch kit comes with 3 dowels, they do not aline in any way what so ever. Am I doing something wrong????????

First problem is you're looking at a Hayne's manual. Go get yourself a factory shop manual and ditch the Hayne's You'll appreciate it once you get it.

I can't recall the exact spec on clutch plate torque, but I imagine it's closer to 30ft-lbs, tightening all of the bolts a little at a time until the plate is seated. I can't see needing any more than that. You're not doing it one at a time, are you?

It should be around 20lb-ft, that's what I have my Centerforce at. But yeah, are you torqueing them a bit at a time? If you do them one at a time the plate will settle unevenly and you'll overtorque everything. Also you better be using the alignment tool and making sure it's centered up. And you also need to make sure that if the flywheel needs the dowls you use them, the clutch will be designed to work with them on some, and not on others.

Thanks for the advice. I'm not doing one at a time, but it just doesn't feel right. How do I know if I need the dowels? The clutch I repaced was a Spec clutch & it didn't have dowels. This one looks like it would need some, but I can only see half the hole for the dowel to be installed.
