its ok but not preferred. the lower the octane the more ping in the motor. higher compression motors require higher octane. anything 10:1 comp needs at least 91 octane (premium).

just fyi, 4v and 4bbl are two different things.

4v is 4 valves per cylinder. 4 bbl is 4 barrel carb.

4v engines are dohc modular motors . like the termi's and mach 1.

you dont have a 4v engine [8D]

Thanks I am learning, what about fuel additive to make up for octane

If you have an engine that has not been moded and not a hipo. you are fine with 87 because compresion should be around 9.5:1. I have been running 87 in mine for about 10 years now with no problems. the only mod I have is a 4V carb. By the way 4V is correct for for a 4 barrel carb. It stands for 4 Ventrie. Here is a link to jeggs using it. http://www.jegs.com/p/Edelbrock/1029736/10002/-1/10287

Well, actually... If the engine was originally a 2v engine, then the compression should be 8.0:1. Thats very low, but the 302 2v was an economy engine, and it was designed to run on low octane fuel. If the engine has no other mods except for the intake and carb (or even if it has a few bolt ons that dont effect compression) then you will be fine running the 87 in it.

Yes, 4V is also used to denote the number of carburetor venturis. And since Ford sometimes altered engine components based on the type of carb to be used, and sometimes cast/stamped 2V and 4V intosome of the parts, referring to older motors as 2V and 4V is correct. This is especially true for cleveland motors as theyreceived drastically different heads and intake manifolds depending on whether or not thecarb was a 2V or 4V.

As far as octane goes, you should run the lowest octane you can without any pinging and without having to alter the timing. If it runs on 87, great. If it pings, move up a grade.
