Default wheel hop solutions

guys, a mate of mine has a '70 Mach1 with a healthy 408 in it.

he has 5 leaf rears, standard eye but recurved about 1.5" lower than stock. He has busted one axle as a result of bad wheel hop and the car is now inthe shopto add some more hp and tq to the 408 to take it from around 400rwhp to 470 or so.

i thought 5 leaf would be stiff enough to eliminate wheel hop but apparently not. He is looking at some sort of slapper bars that go over the top of the spring from the front eye to the axle housing.

anyone come across something like this before?

Slapper bars are horrible solutions to wheel hop. Cal Tracs are much better, although I don't see a problem with original Traction Masters traction bars. They were OE on early Shelbys and they work great.

+1 Cal Tracs. I have a friend who had them installed on his 66 coupe and he said it fixed the problem immediately. Of course he wasnt running a 408 [8D]

slapper bars may or may not be the right terminology but they're def on top of the spring.
is this idea no good?

seems there are plenty of supporters of caltracs. Traction masters hang underneath running forward right?

Yes. Traction Masters are simply a bar hooked to a plate boltedunder the axle at one end andhooked to another platewelded to the frame at the other end. They prevent rotational movement of the axle, therefore eliminating wheel hop. They're cheap and very effective.

Cal Tracs work similarly (same principle), but are more adjustable and more expensive.

We have a set of CalTracs installed on the 68. The 68 car has a 408 w/TKO600 and a new Currie 3.91 posi rearend.

The CalTracs traction systemwill eliminate your wheel hop.

$400 is not expensive for a quality component.

Your friend will not be disappointed.

I have 5 leaf mid eye grab a trac springs on my 66 Must+ told me that would be more than enough but I added the traction master bars any way. I have a supercharged 347
No idea what power it makes yet but it is a beast.
