Generator Vs. Alternator?
In my 64.5I have a generator and I have been considering switching to an alternator becauseI want to put asystem into my mustang. What are the benefits of putting one into my car? How much do alternatorscost to switch them? And does the value of the car go down?
If you have a 289, I suspect it is a very simple swap provided you have the correct alternator bracket and use a 1-wire alternator with an internal regulator. That would be the easiest route.
First, read up on 1-wire versus regular alternators and brackets for 289s. Try the Powermaster website among others.
Second, assess your electrical needs - Do you have AC, or plan to add an electric fan or high wattage stereo or power devices (windows, antenna, etc.). Electric fans draw a lot of current and a 100 amp alternator is probably a minimum if you have a high performance fan. A high amp, properly regulated alternator will not hurt your battery. Large current running through old wires not designed for large current is a fire hazard so do your reading and plan accordingly.
That's my $.02.
