Need floor pans
I am close to buying a 65' 289 Coupe and the floor pans need to be replaced. Does anyone know where I can buy some floor pans or if I could get an estimate on how much it should cost to buy them and have them installed?
I know there are a few donor cars at my local junkyard that I could probably get some from, but I'm not completely sure.
I do not have any pics of the current car I am trying to buy. I gotta go look at it next week.
They're wanting $1500.00 for it. The engine was just rebuilt, less than 1,000 miles, and it has a C4 transmission.
What do you guy think? I realize I need pictures bad, but I'll try my best to get some when I see it in person.
Thanks

My car at best needs a few patches and more likely needs the full length floor pans replaced.
No need to go to the junk yard for them, you can buy them at just about any Classic Mustang parts dealer...I know NDP has them, Virginia Classic Mustang has them as well as a local (in Houston) place called John's Mustang.
The full length pans run about $70 each. The entire floor is between $450 and $500.
You may / may not also need toe boards, trunk floor and or other misc. pieces replaced in addition to the floor pans.
The labor depends on your area. Around here I have been getting quotes for between $60 and $65 / hour.
I spoke with a guy on Tuesday that said he could put full length floor pans in both sides of my car for $1,000. He does custom work all the time.
The local "hot rod" shop that does nothing but restorations guessed about 20 at $65 / hours so that would be around $1,300.
You probably won't have much luck however at your run of the mill insurance claim chasing body shop. I have talked to several and most of them don't really want to even talk about putting floor pans in a classic.

You may be better off finding a $3500 car than a $1500 car.
Make sure you check out every square inch of the frame rails. The cowl (the little slats under the windshield) fill with pine needles and then rust out. Expensive and annoying to fix that.
The 3500/1500 statement means that very quickly a $1500 car can turn into a $3500 car without doing ANYTHING but metal work.

Visit the Mustang vendor sites and order their printed catalogs and/or download their PDF versions. This will give you the price of pretty much every part of the car. Floors and cowls will be likely be rotted out of a 3500.00 car just as badly as a 1200.00 car unfortunately. If your looking at have all the welding done by a shop I'd contact a few local shops and ask them what they would charge. Even better ask if they have a mechanic who could go take a look at the car with you. Labor charges will vary depending on where you live so thats going to play into it.
" Find a local Mustang Parts Company to save on shipping."
I have been really happy to have found a local parts supply, especially when I need something in a hurry.
To order a rush part from other places you have to pay extra shipping for 2 day air or whatever. From the local place, I just request UPS ground and it still gets here the next day.
Not to mention if I have to order something big (such as my floor pans and / or carpet here soon) that would require "truck shipping"...then it is worth it for me to make the hour and a half round trip over there to pick up the part in my Explorer.
