Personally I would re-paint the engine bay,Check all the wiring harnesses for exposed, loose or broken wires.
I have heard of guys using spray-on bed liner (has many colors) on the firewall, it keeps out some engine noise, heat, moisture and actually helps with the structural ridgidity of the car,but adds weight 5-6 pounds I would think, Just make certian you don't get it where you don't want it, that stuff is like cement.
But definately clean it up with some sandpaper, degreaser and then primer it.

If you hit any seam sealer or rubberized undercoating, a wire brush on a drill just smears it around. You have to pretty much scrape or chisel that stuff off. The wire brush can also leave marks in the metal which can show through the new paint unless you sand the marks out. I use nylon fiber drill brushes on my car a lot. You can get them in fine, medium and heavy and they don't tend to damage the metal but they still strip off paint and rust.

I cleaned out the engine and started to use the wire brush i see it did scratch the metal. i will use the fiber drill brushes you mentioned to get rid of the scratches as much as i can, where can i get them?. Hoses and wires are all intact so thats a +.
Does the bed liner have a smooth finish to it, will it mix in with the paint?

I just did exactly when you are wanting to do, i used a wire wheel and a cord drill. and just went to town, in places where the old paint was really bad, i took it all the way down to bare metal, and where the paint wasn't to bad, i just made it smooth, then i went to the auto parts store, got black primer and low gloss engine paint.

heres what it looks like.

I'm not sure if the bedline stuff can be smoothed out after application or not, probably not. It would look like undercoating. I have only heard of guys using it,That are not show cars.
I think sean w. has a good idea and it looks nice too.
