Default Popping Carb

Hello,
I have a 1971 5.8L 351 Cleveland Mustang Coupe and I am having some trouble. A couple of days ago the solenoid near the car battery blew out and melted the wires connected to it. I have since replaced all of this and the car starts up fine. The only problem is the carb pops when I step on the gas. I have been told it is the engine timing or a crackedvalve. Then I was told it was not the timing and something else. What would cause this and how do I fix it? Thanks for any help.

A valve will do it all the time. If you just rev it up, you will get it also. Exrtreme advanced or retarded timing, or a lean spot will cause the pop also.
