Why was it leaking?
My oil filter started leaking this weekend. at first I thought it was my pan gasket, but upon further inspection I found that i was leaking from the filter rubber gasket.. Thats strange, I allways heard that you only put the filter on hand tight "snug" right? So I changed the filter, put a new motorcraft one on thinking that it was just the gasket, but this one leaked just as much.. Which was a steady drip.. So I grabbed my handy filter wrench and put another couple of half turns on the thing and it finally sealed up, but its now on there really tight..
Any one else have this problem? My block surface seemed in good shape, no nicks or dings to make it leak..

when i do an oil change on the 67, i lube up the rubber ring around the new filter with the old oil, clean the block surface, then put it on there nice and snug.
im thinking your just not very stong?[&:]
or maybe your leaving the old rubber on the block?!?! sometimes they come off the filter and stick to the motor - always gotta make sure its off before installing the new one.
+1000000000.3 for lubing the rubber before reinstalling the new filter (i use new oil, but it doesnt really matter). i also fill the filter with oil before installing. if you fill it up once it will absorb most of the oil and when you **** it to screw onto the side of the motor you shouldnt really spill any. this helps prevent any moments of oil starvation when you start the car for the first time after a change.

I did put some oil on the ring as allways, It just would not seal up by cranking on it with my hand.. oh, well If i have to crank on it from now on I will,, as long as it dont leak like that any more..
