Default heater core replacement

Just got my 68 coupe out from sitting most of the winter and am smelling antifreeze from inside of the car when driving. Carpet is dry....heater vent is dry... Radiator down about a half gal...no water visible anywhere under car or around heater hoses. After a 15 min. drive tonight my windshield fogged up. Is there a way to check the heater core "before" removing from car? It looks like it could be a bear!!. Could it be an all day project? Any hints will be helpfull....Thanks

Default RE: heater core replacement

I just rebuilt my heater box. I don't know how you would check it while still in the car because that thing is completely enclosed. The box has to come out entirely in order to access the heater core. The box is clamped together, basically two halfs surrounding the heater core. I'm not sure what all is involved in only getting to the heater box. Mine was a complete disassemble so it all came out anyway.
