Make sure it is a windsor. Build a 408 Stroker with some good aftermarket heads and intake. and a good 750 carb and good exhaust. You should come in about 450 HP.

Engine kit will run about 1000
Machine work about 1000
Heads about 800
Intake about 200
Carb about 600

Total about 3600

Dude, check out FoMoCos catalog. They are very reasonable with their engine prices and they have a factory Ford new build. The 392 shortblock is around 3500.00. Throw a decent set of heads and induction on there and you are smokin' for under 5K.

I just got done doing a performance rebuild on my 351w. I did all the work myself except for the machining and looking over the used Trick Flow heads I bought. I ended spending about $4k on the motor and I used, used parts where I could. My motor should make about 420 hp @ the flywheel. I can give you the build specs if you like.

You should be able to make 350 hp no problem. You can make that hp level with iron GT-40 heads, CompCams XE268h cam, 10.5:1 compression, high-rise dual plane intake, roller rockers and headers. You can go several different ways with cylinder heads; you can find iron GT-40 heads all over the place for around $300 but they will need work and will probably cost about the same as a set of aftermarket aluminum heads when all is said and done. World Products makes a good line of iron sbf cylinder heads; World Windsor Jr. & World Windsor Sr.

Head choice is probably going to come down to how much you want to spend.

You've got a lot more to buy than just heads and a carb/intake when buying a short block...$5k isnt going to touch it.
