Traction adder woes, HELP PLEASE!
OK, so the aution didn't go my way. It went for over $600, and I just cannot afford to pay that much. I am really needing a Trac lock for an 8 inch rear end. I can buy clutches and rebuild it if need be, and can set up the gears by myself, thats no big deal. But i need some kind of posi. I do not want any type of spool, If I wanted this I would just weld my spider gears. Does anybody have anything that I might be able to use?
Why do you need it right now? I'm sure it's driveable as is, even if it doesn't really grab off the line (and believe me, I know what that's like). Why not save up to do it right? You're going to be hard pressed to get a full center sectionset up for less than $600, even if you do it yourself.
Well, you see, I have 2-4 years left in college that I have to pay for, and a $2000 a smester, its hard to save for school, and do work on the car. I guess it isn't something that I absolutely need, but its something that I do need to start thinking about because nothing has ever been done to it, so its only a matter of time before that 2 pinion carrier gives up the ghost. As far as Currie goes, they can bent over and kiss my white *** before I pay $900 for 2 axles and a housing. I had a guy tell me today that he has a complete drum to drum nine inch he'd sell me for $600. Im not sure what gears it has or if it is a posi or not, but I told the guy that it was too rich for my blood before I asked any questions. There is a neighor of mine who has a Ford junkyard. He has about 50 ( inches piled up and said he probably as one that will bolt in. He gets $150 for them complete, but digging through a pile of axles will be a challenge. I will probably call him tomorrow and see if I can go llook for one on Saturday. It is just that my budget is really tight, and I am scared that the 8" open carrier is going to break.
It probably won't be the carrier first anyways. Axles usually go first, which are the same as the ones you'll find in the junkyards in a stock 9in.So add 350 bucks to the total cost of rear end you buy when you snap those. Then you'll see it's not all that expensive. Especially when you mstart to make good HP, and the weak stock housing flexes and start to leak. Don't ask me how I know. I'm ditching my stock 9in housing one of these days pretty soon.
Don't underestimate your 8 inch pegleg. My brother andI havemercilessly flogged the one in the fastback for the last 20 years and it is still going. I have a 9" TracLoc on the bench but for me it has just been one ofthose'if it ain'tbroke don't fix it' projects.
Unless it has had the crap completely beat out of it and it isshaking apartthen I woudparty'till it pukes.

I wouldn't be. Unless you're running those drag radials and traction bars, I don't think you'llget enough traction to break it with just one wheel spinning. Like I said, I'm running a 3.25 open and Radial T/A's behind my 331 and traction is a lost cause. Full throttle in first at anything over 2500rpm and the right rear tire goes up in smoke.
If you can set something up for really cheap, cool. But usually 8" parts aren't cheap or easy to get a hold of. Figure $400 for a new trac-loc unit, $180 for gears, $100 for a rebuild kit, and you're already over the $600 mark.

Very true, and unfortunate.[&o] I thought about just pulling it out and getting the 3.55s installed and just welding the crap out of the spider gears. I have seen this done a ton of times but really would rather not since it will hurt the tire wear and I don't like it screeching the tires when you turn.
Please, please don't do that. Spools and welded spider gears make driving on the street extremely unsafe, and since you said it won't be seeing strip use often, I'm assuming you're driving it on the street. Save and do it the right way. I know it's hard (I'm in college, too), but it'll be worth it.
