Which direction do I put the seal in?

Would I install it so that the cupped portion is facing the dif? Or would I install it so as the metal backing of the seal is facing the differential?

Answers appreciated, hopefully this will be my last question on the subject.

Cupped side facing the diff.

Smear a thin amount of RTV on the outside circumference of the seal, ie, the surface that will mate with the axle tube. Use a proper driver to get it in perfectly straight. A large socket usually does the trick nicely.

Once you have the seal in place and seated, be sure to visually check and make sure the retaining spring is still in place on the inside of the seal. use a small hand-held mirror. Two items you need to be careful for here, first, make sure the spring does not come out as you put the axle in. Keep the axle centered as you install it. And don't forget to put a small amount of lube on the seal to keep from burning or tearing it under initial break in.
